A dining hall for 200 children
Our kitchen is finished and cooking two hot meals a day. The children still eat them outside or at their desks. We are building a hall so they can eat together, and so we have a space for assemblies and parents' days.
When Ikirwa opened in 2012 we had 22 pupils and lunch was a picnic. Today we cook porridge and a hot lunch for around 200 children every school day in the kitchen that Moyo Elimu helped us build in 2023. What we do not have is anywhere to eat it.
The dining hall is the next building on the site. It will seat the whole school, double as an assembly hall and a space for parents’ meetings and exams, and give the boarders somewhere to do homework in the evenings.
Where we are
The site is levelled and the foundations are marked out. We build in stages as money arrives: foundations, then walls, then roof, then floor, windows and furniture. Every stage is photographed and posted here.

From four rooms and a small office in 2012 to eight classrooms and a dormitory, paid for by grassroots supporters and charity climbers.
Keeping the school buses running
The government does not provide transport. The school owns and maintains two buses that collect pupils from the surrounding villages every morning.
